The Ascot Park Hotel was once again filled with festive cheer as ILT hosted two Christmas dinners for Invercargill residents aged over 70, on December 8 & 9.
The much‑loved annual tradition treated 700 guests to a delicious three‑course meal, all served by ILT board and staff who volunteered their time.
This year’s event carried extra significance as crowd favourite Margaret Bates celebrated 30 years of performing at the Christmas dinners. Her familiar keyboard melodies have become part of the soundtrack of the occasion and once again helped set the tone for the night.
Adding to the atmosphere was a line‑up of local performers who showcased the depth of talent in our community. FEMME Choir from Southland Girls’ High School brought beautiful choral harmonies. Local club Empire Aerobics impressed with a dynamic, high‑energy routine, while members of Invercargill Musical Theatre entertained guests with much‑loved musical numbers.
ILT President Paddy O’Brien said the dinners were a highlight on the calendar.
“The board and staff look forward to this event every year, it really is a highlight for us,” he said.
“It’s a special chance to spend time with the older members of our community and recognise the contribution they continue to make to our city,” Mr O’Brien said.
ILT Chief Executive Chris Ramsay said the organisation was proud to continue the tradition, particularly at a time when many households were feeling the pinch.
“We are delighted to continue the tradition. It is a fun occasion for both our guests and our volunteers,” Mr Ramsay said.
“With the rising cost of living, it feels even more important to offer a night out where people can simply relax, enjoy themselves and let us take care of them,” he said.
Since the first event in 1993, more than 25,000 meals have been served, creating lasting memories and cementing the dinners as a cherished part of Invercargill’s festive season.
This year, we expanded the registration options to include both post and online, and the digital option proved especially popular, with more than 80% of applicants choosing to register online.
