ILT Interact: A Tailored Approach to Digital Education

In classrooms across Invercargill, primary school students are embracing the digital age with the help of ILT Interact. This innovative programme led by ICT Facilitator Jason Whyte, is transforming the way students and teachers engage with technology in the classroom.

Jason Whyte, a primary-trained teacher with 15 years of classroom experience, brings a wealth of knowledge to his role. “Helping students reach their goals is the main reason I’m a teacher,” says Whyte. “I love to help students be the best person they can be and achieve their goals.”

ILT Interact has evolved significantly since 2011, when Group ILT initially funded interactive whiteboards for Invercargill primary schools. With direction from Jason and the Invercargill Primary Principals Association (IPPA), and ongoing funding support from Group ILT, the programme has grown into a multifaceted initiative that keeps pace with the ever-changing technological landscape. It now offers students opportunities to explore everything from coding and digital citizenship to movie making and animation.

The success of Interact lies in its collaborative nature. Whyte works closely with the teachers and IPPA to ensure that the programme integrates with the curriculum and addresses the specific needs of each school. “The hope is that we’ve taken away the barriers for teachers and the classroom,” Whyte explains.

Interact’s impact extends beyond the classroom, benefiting teachers, teacher aides, support staff, students, and their families. There are free digital resources available online for everyone to access – https://sites.google.com/ascot.school.nz/iltinteract/home

Jason also regularly hosts digital safety evenings to help parents navigate the digital world and to share what’s appropriate digital behaviour for primary school aged students.

Julian Ineson, principal of St. Theresa’s School says Invercargill is often the envy of other regions.

“The primary sector doesn’t typically have this level of tech support. We’re really lucky to have this programme for our kaiako and tamariki,” he said.

Looking ahead, Interact is set to expand its focus on emerging technologies like AI and virtual reality. Always aiming to extend the digital capability of Invercargill students.

ILT President, Paddy O’Brien, says “Our city’s youth have always been priority for ILT. By fully funding Interact, we’re ensuring the next generation is well-equipped to thrive in the digital age. This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to fostering education and innovation in our community.”
