The installation of the 80th Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in Invercargill marks a significant achievement in a joint community programme between Group ILT and Hato Hone St John. Fittingly, this milestone coincides with ILT’s 80th anniversary and reflects the organisation’s ongoing commitment to supporting the community.
The latest AED has been installed outside Ascot Four Square (654 Tay Street) in a 24/7 accessible lockbox. This essential device replaces an expired unit and restores a critical resource to the area.
Ascot Four Square owners Tracey and Graeme Neilson were delighted to join the Hato Hone St John programme and get a new AED on their store front.
“When we took the expired AED down, it was amazing how many people noticed and pointed it out to us. We didn’t realise how many lives it impacted until it wasn’t there. It’s great to have it back and know it will be properly maintained going forward,” said Tracey Neilson.
The location of the new AED is particularly significant as the Ascot Four Square serves as the final pick-up point for Hato Hone St John’s health shuttle to Dunedin. This health shuttle team are thrilled to know there’s an AED back in place should they have a need.
ILT President Paddy O’Brien expressed the organisation’s pride in the ongoing partnership with Hato Hone St John.
“Together, we’ve installed 80 AEDs across the city, ensuring these lifesaving devices are readily accessible to our community. The addition of this AED to the partnership in such a prominent location, is a fitting way to commemorate our 80th anniversary and give back to the community that has supported us throughout the years.”
“We look forward to continuing to support Hato Hone St John and the vital work they do in this space. Their dedication and expertise make this programme possible, and we’re truly grateful for all they do,” said Mr O’Brien.
Group ILT first celebrated funding 75 defibrillators in 2019, coinciding with its 75th anniversary. Since then, the partnership with Hato Hone St John has expanded through funding from ILT Foundation that covers replacement batteries, pads, and ongoing maintenance to ensure every device within the programme remains in working order.
Tracy Kilkelly, Community Engagement Coordinator for Hato Hone St John has been instrumental in driving this initiative. She encourages people to download the AED Locations app, which identifies the nearest defibrillator.
“It’s simple to use and could help save a life when it matters most. But first and foremost, always call 111 in an emergency.”
Hato Hone St John will offer a hands-on training session, “Three Steps for Life” for the Ascot Four Square team. This free and simple session will ensure they know how to operate the equipment should the need arise.
Group ILT and Hato Hone St John’s AED initiative is a great example of a collaborative partnership that puts community benefit at the heart of it.
