Community at Heart!

When it comes to saving lives, partnership is everything. For nearly two decades, Hato Hone St John and Group ILT have joined forces to expand Invercargill’s network of bright yellow Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) ensuring critical devices are more accessible than ever.

In 2024, Invercargill welcomed its 80th public AED through this community partnership and fittingly during ILT’s 80th anniversary year.

The bright yellow AED now stands outside Ascot Four Square on Tay Street, returning to a familiar and vital spot after the previous unit expired. It’s also the last stop for Hato Hone St John’s health shuttle to Dunedin.

Store owners Tracey and Graeme Neilson were delighted to join the Hato Hone St John programme and get a new AED on their store front.

“When we took the expired AED down, it was amazing how many people asked about it,” says Tracey. “We didn’t realise how many lives it impacted until it wasn’t there. It’s great to have it back and know it’ll be properly maintained.”

This long-standing community partnership between Hato Hone St John and Group ILT has been quietly adding to the network across Invercargill since 2007.

Funding for this programme means devices aren’t just installed, Hato Hone St John also oversees maintenance, including battery changes, pad replacements and regular servicing, ensuring every device is always ready when it’s needed most.

ILT President, Paddy O’Brien has nothing but praise for Hato Hone St John and the vital work they do.

“Their dedication and expertise make this programme possible, and we’re truly grateful for all they do,” said Mr O’Brien.

And the programme is still going strong, with the 81st AED recently installed at Oreti Park, where Rugby Southland called it a “fantastic addition” for players, fans, and their wider community.

Hato Hone St John’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Tracy Kilkelly, says she is incredibly proud of the programme.

“It’s always wonderful to see the difference these partnerships make,” Tracy said. “Every location, every AED, every training—together, it adds up to lives saved.”

“We encourage everyone to download the AED Locations app, so you know where the nearest device is. But always remember—call 111 first in any emergency,” she adds.
